About
The W 196 was developed by Mercedes-Benz in anticipation of the new F1 regulations shifting to 2.5-liter engines from 1954. The W 196 R variant was specifically constructed for competition in F1. Its 2496 cc inline-8 engine produced 285 HP and was capable of reaching a top speed of 180.2 mph. The car delivered outstanding results during the 1954 and 1955 Formula One World Championships, with driver Juan Manuel Fangio securing the drivers' title in both seasons.
