About
The original Chevrolet Corvette earned numerous race victories. The Corvette SS, a purpose-built race car developed under the direction of GM engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov, featured a 364.9 HP fuel-injected 283 cubic inch engine, and was capable of reaching a top speed of 181.4 mph. However, following a major incident in NASCAR, the AMA imposed a ban on factory-backed race programs. The Stingray Racer was introduced as the successor to the Corvette SS and went on to win the SCCA Class C Modified title in 1959 and 1960.
