About
The Renault R5 ("Cinq") Turbo drew major attention when it was introduced at the 1978 Paris Motor Show. Initially developed as a prototype for the World Rally Championship (WRC), a production version followed in 1980. The transformation was dramatic, its front-engine/front-wheel-drive layout replaced with a mid-engine/rear-wheel-drive one. The new engine delivered 1.5 times the power and more than three times the torque compared to the standard model. Making its debut at the 1980 WRC Tour de Corse, the R5 Turbo dominated the field, establishing Renault as a serious WRC force.
