About
Introduced in 1989, the second-generation MR2, designated SW20, succeeded the AW11, Japan’s first mass-produced mid-engine sports car. Its body dimensions were stretched to the upper limits of Japan’s Class 5 vehicle regulations, while its design adopted smoother, more aerodynamic lines to emphasize its mid-engine configuration. At launch, the car faced criticism for its challenging handling character, but subsequent refinements transformed it into a well-balanced performer.
