The FIAT Abarth 595 made its debut in 1963. It was derived from the second-generation FIAT 500 tuned by Abarth. An even more potent variant of the 595 later emerged as the 595 Esseesse. While it retained the same engine displacement, engineers raised compression to boost output to 31.6 HP. Thanks to this added performance, the 595 lineup made its mark in European racing, dominating the under 600 cc category.
