The first Porsche 911 to carry the RS badge was the 911 Carrera RS 2.7, released in 1973. The "RS" stood for Rennsport, meaning racing sport in German. Developed to meet FIA Group 4 homologation requirements, the car was designed with motorsports in mind. It quickly proved to be a hit—its initial production run of 500 units sold out immediately. Due to high demand, Porsche expanded production, ultimately building a total of 1,580 examples.
